The Why

Pinkal began searching for books that would help her daughter relate to and learn about the Indian traditions and culture surrounding death; however, there were not many books that fit the bill, especially for a child. This called for Pinkal to use her own experiences and emotional vulnerability to create “Om Shanti.”  “Om Shanti” is intended to provide a tangible means of coping and understanding to children who have lost a loved one. In the process, Pinkal also found an outlet for her grief.

About her Father

Nitin Amin

Pinkal’s father was an intelligent, hardworking, and handsome man who possessed a deep passion for sharing his knowledge of life, food, culture, languages, and chemistry with his kids. He often recounted stories from his youth in India, as well as his experiences in America after arriving to further his studies. Pinkal and her brother cherished hearing about the years their parents spent in Africa, where they lived for five years following their marriage.

Pinkal’s father always wished the very best for everyone and found genuine contentment in life. Pinkal vividly recalls an early lesson he tried to teach her about saving money when she was in first grade. He gave her a dollar and encouraged her to “save” it. The next day, however, she spent it on a slushy at school. When he later asked for the dollar back, Pinkal had to confess that it was gone. Looking back, Pinkal realizes how much that small moment reflected the challenges her parents faced as immigrants—highly educated individuals working tirelessly to build a life for their young family in a new country.

She remains deeply grateful for the love, sacrifice, and dedication her parents showed. They ensured that either parent was always home to welcome Pinkal and her brother after school. Their love, guidance, and unwavering support shaped the person she is today and continue to inspire her as she strives to instill those same values in her own daughters.

The loss of a parent is a pain that time cannot truly heal. Pinkal thinks of her father every single day and misses him profoundly. Some days bring tears; others, smiles, because she knows that is what he would want. What comforts her most is the enduring memory of his kindness, humility, and gentle spirit.
